Author: Faten Hodroge Next to Christmas, Halloween is the most popular holiday in Canada...and understandably so! When else do you get to dress up, be scary, and get lots of free candy!
Just like Christmas, though, planning and preparation can make this year's Halloween the best one ever.
If you have kids who are going out trick-or-treating, make sure you follow appropriate safety recommendations, such as making sure they carry a flashlight or glow stick and that their costumes fit properly so they won't trip on them. If they're younger children, an adult should always accompany them.
As an adult, even you can choose to wear a costume...and there are plenty of options available. Check oyacostumes for a great collection of costumes. Many Canadians now hold Halloween parties so, even if you aren't taking kids out trick-or-treating or handing out candy at home, you still have an excuse to dress up. So go for it!
Because Halloween is so much fun, even if you're staying home handing out candy, you can have a great time. Besides making sure you have enough treats on hand for all the little kids showing up at your door going "trick-or-treat", make sure you've chosen tasty treats that most kids like...or that you'll like if there are any leftovers!
Feel free to wear a costume yourself, and always enjoy yourself while looking at everyone else's costumes. The kids will all be excited, so acting 'frightened' by a scary outfit or 'awed' by a fairy princess will delight each child.
Not only that, but decorating your house ahead of time is fun and adds to the anticipation of Halloween.
Obviously you'll need to carve at least one jack-o'-lantern. Halloween just isn't Halloween without a carved pumpkin sitting out on your porch or steps with a candle lighting it up from inside, making its eyes, nose and mouth glow in the dark letting trick-or-treaters know that you're waiting for them with yummy treats.
Decorating your entryway with spooky decorations is always a good idea, even if you just hang up a cardboard skeleton and some "spider web" material. Haunted music could be played through a speaker in your window to add to the ambience.
If you're really ambitious, like many Canadians who really get into Halloween, you could set up an outdoor "haunted house" display to attract even more trick-or-treaters to your door.
"Living" displays and "smoking" cauldrons will thrill children and adults alike, and can be easily done by recruiting a few teenage neighbors and using either dry ice or an inexpensive smoke machine.
Or you could opt for the many giant inflatable displays, such as gargoyles and ghosts, or for moveable displays, such as skeletons and zombies, that are sound/motion-activated...and guaranteed to startle people!
Regardless of what you choose to celebrate it, Halloween in Canada is one of the most fun holidays of the year, so enjoy it! The rest of us will!!
