Author: Lino Claudio In general, Lapland refers to a cold mountainous region scattered above the Arctic Circle, covering parts of Finland, Sweden and Norway. Hence, there are various places and aboriginal communities in these countries that are named after "Lapland." Sweden originally owned the Finland Lapland territory but the entire stretch was divided between the two nations in 1809.
When one is in Sweden, there is definitely no confusion when mentioning Lapland. No one can get lost looking for the popular Sweden Lapland, bordered by Scandinavia, Norway and the Gulf of Bothnia. Covering about a quarter of the entire nation, Lapland is accentuated by many rivers, lakes, mountains and of course, great snow slopes.
Because of its high location in the cold mountain regions of Northern Europe, Lapland in Sweden endures a harsh cold weather reaching below -40°C in the latter part of the year. This accounts for the sparse population of only about 70,000 inhabitants. However, the climate setback has been turned into a lucrative opportunity, transforming the area into a big international winter recreation park.
Aside from snow and ski adventures, Lapland also offers unique visitor attractions. Many would associate Sweden with Santa Clause, and Lapland is no less than the home of the jolly bearded fellow. There is a Christmas snow theme park in the area of Dalarna called Santa World. Sweden's highest mountain peak, the Kebnekaise is also found in Lapland.
There are also local activities that tourists may participate in like snow sculpting and other forms of snow art, trekking in national parks like Padjelanta and Sarek, and going to the Norbotten Museum which has the largest collection of Lapland artifacts. Lapland summer time, though very short, also offers a unique attraction in the area: the appearance of the so-called midnight sun every summer equinox, around June 21.
