This is a British musical that made a first ever appearance in the year 1960. Its composition and the lyrics have been given by Lionel Bart. It enjoyed a very long and a fulfilling run that was made into a movie that was directed by Carol Reed in 1968. The theme and the story of this musical has been loosely based o the theme of the Oliver Twist that was authored by Charles Dickens. This particular musical was a debut adaptation of the mentioned and much popular Charles Dickens novel that went on to be amongst the top stage hits of its times. Its adaptation of the novel is what contributed to its success. Apart from this there have been two more Dickens musicals that were showcased around the fifties, but none of them was as popular or half as dramatic as the drama that was created by the story of 'Oliver Twist". Further its stage setting and the innovation designs that were made by Sean Kenny were too good. This stage show was the debut of many child artists who went o to make it big in their respective fields. Other than its due share of praise it also gathered several criticisms fro the critics owing to its racial and ethnic stereotyping. It did not go un noted that the writer of the play as well as the composer of the play was a Jew, and in addition several of the Jewish actors were cast in the leading roles during the first act namely Ron Moody, Georgia Brown and Horsey to name a few. The original novel as much simplified as compared to the musical. It also contained several changes that included the representation of Fagin as a comic character rather than a criminal in the latter part of the story. This musical is going to see a revival in the next year that is 2009 at the venue of the West End. The main roles that are of Oliver and Nancy will be played by skilled actors who have been revealed by the BBC1. The character of Oliver is going to be played turn by turn three different child actors namely Gwion Jones, Harry Stott and Laurence Jeffcoate whereas the character of Nancy will be played by the renowned stage actress Jodie Prenger. [2] The original pay that had been produced in London production had made a debut in the New Theatre that is now known as the Noel Coward Theatre. Som of the riginal cast members were Ron Moody, Georgia Brown and Barry Humphries to name a few. Mr. Sowerberry ahd also been included for the very brief role of the "undertaker". Today the peron who played the role of the original Oliver has made it big in the professio of photography in Hollywood and has several movies to his credit namely Star Wars to name the most popular one.
