When someone begins a new diet, they are full of vigor and excitement. They are one hundred percent committed and intend to stick to it every minute of the day. For about a week or two, they do just that. They exercise, eat according to their prescribed diet, and enthusiastically wait for the results to come. That is when the problems start.

For most dieters, the problem is not in the physical realm. The problems with a diet begin in the mind. This common dieting problem is due to the fact that we want results now, and we have not prepared our mind for the roadblocks of dieting properly.

Our mind is funny that way. We may weigh 400 pounds on the outside but everyone is still a normal size in their mind. If not, then they still want to be. With this being the case, it is important to prepare our mind for several dieting problems before they occur. This will help us to deal with them, and stay on track when we encounter them in our diet.

The first roadblock that we encounter in our diet is usually the old, "I have done great for two weeks and that one donut will not matter" trick. Our minds are naturally going to try to reason with itself and negotiate a possible cheat session.

Rewarding ourselves can be healthy, so that is the best way to deal with this first problem. Before our diet starts, set up a reasonable reward program that allows for the option of having a treat. It is very important to spread these out over the course of a month so that you do not undo the positive results of your diet. Planning it ahead will keep those negotiations of the mind at bay.

The next and most powerful roadblock that we run into is when we plateau in our weight loss. This can be incredibly disheartening. We must prepare our minds before hand that this will come, and that we must drive on through it. It is not because the diet is not working.

The most effective way to combat this mind trick is to only weigh ourselves once every week. If we go to the scales every day to ride the rollercoaster of weight loss we are defeated from the start. Once a week is more than enough, and once a month is even better. This way we will not be paying attention to every lost or gained pound on our diet.

It is also important to make sure that you spend some quality time with yourself before starting each diet. Make sure that you are doing this because you love and care about your body. This can be very liberating when you consider the fact that our mindset is going to be 90 percent of the reason we succeed or fail. You have to be dieting for the right reasons. If you prepare your mind in this way, then your chances for dieting success will multiply in kind.
