In the middle of July one of the worst things that could happen on a scorcher day is for the air

conditioning unit to go on the fritz. Purchasing a new unit is a must at these times. There are many things to know

when replacing an air conditioning unit. For example do you know what the terms BTU is? Would you find it

helpful to know how much energy one could save you? Do you know what brand to shop for, what features you

might want, and how much you would like to spend? These are questions you will have to know when you set out

to make this purchase.

One of the first tasks you will have to do before anything is to decide if you are going to purchase a room unit or

a central unit. One will cool a specific room and the other is a unit that involves ducts and vents. Once that is

decided you will then need to decide on the brand you will like and what types of features will work best for you.

If you decide on a room unit you will have to measure to see what size you will need. Buying more for your money

doesn't give you more bang for your buck. It will not cool off your room faster because it is bigger. It will actually

use more energy by cycling on and off too frequently, not to mention that it cost more to purchase a bigger unit. If

you will need help sizing your area two groups publish calculation aids - the Air Conditioning Contractors of

America (ACCA) and the American society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers

(ASHRAE).

Efficiency is something to consider when making your purchase. You want to determine how much BTU which is

British Thermal Units of heat that the unit can remove per hour. For a room air conditioner it is rated using the

EER or Energy Efficiency Ratio. For Central Air units it is the SEER or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The

higher the EER or SEER the higher the cost. For an EER you want a rating of at least a 9.0 or over 10 with

hotter climates. With a SEER you will want a 9.7 or 10 and you can go even higher. The best thing to do is to

check the national standards and attached to every new air conditioning unit is an Energy Guide Label.

There are so many models and brands to choose from on the market. If you do some homework on each brand

that interests you will find a description of each type, the cost and how efficient it will be. Look for reputation

along with all the other things that interest you. You will want to buy according to your own personal preferences

however all of the factors mentioned above go into helping you make the decision of what could be efficient for

you as well.
